Sheriff Dan Coverley

With more than 25 years of law enforcement in the community, Sheriff Dan Coverley is seeking a second term as Sheriff of Douglas County. He will continue the good work of the office by leading with integrity. He has served with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office since 1997 and has held every rank, working in every division, culminating with his election to Sheriff in 2019. During his career, he has worked as a patrol officer, motorcycle officer, investigator, sergeant, and captain. He was on the SWAT team for 16 years, serving as team leader for the last eight years. Coverley was one of the original members of the Street Enforcement Team (SET), which tackled narcotics.

Dan comes from a family and a community that stresses the importance of integrity, a characteristic that is important to him and has been operating with all of his life. Born in Carson City and raised in Gardnerville, Coverley has always called Douglas County home. He graduated from Douglas High School, where he played football under his father, Bill Coverley. As a longtime head coach of the varsity football team, Bill Coverley was known for leading the Douglas Tigers to their first state championship.

After graduating from the University of New Mexico with a degree in Criminology, Coverley began his career in law enforcement with the Albuquerque Police Department, where he worked for two years, before he and his wife, Sarah, decided to return home. Together, they have raised their three daughters in Douglas County, a place Coverley says is the most beautiful place to raise a family. Coverley’s daughters continued the family tradition of attending Douglas High School and excelling in varsity sports.

Coverley stays busy in the community. He has coached football at Douglas High School, club soccer, and rec-league basketball. Coverley enjoys the beauty of Douglas County, and the limitless opportunities it allows for recreation. He enjoys hunting, fishing, skiing, and team roping. Coverley and his family have roots in the agriculture of the Carson Valley where they lease a small ranch and raise beef cattle.

Coverley’s commitment to the community, and his desire for it to retain its rural, peaceful character, have led him to fight hard against crime. As Douglas County Sheriff, Coverley has worked hard to keep our neighborhoods clean from drugs, gangs, and property crimes. During his first term, he oversaw the deployment of Live911 technology, state-of-the-art technology that will lead to faster response times of our first responders. He has shown continued support for community programs like Good Neighbors, Neighborhood Watch, and TRIAD. DCSO has conducted several special investigations and made multiple arrests involving drugs, narcotics, and human trafficking. His department also was crucial to evacuation efforts during the Tamarack and Caldor Wildland Fires.

Dan is seeking a second term because there is still work to be done for our community. Coverley has a firm belief that Douglas County owes its safety and security to the dozens of deputies that patrol the streets and respond to calls. Coverley will continue to fight for a more competitive salary in an effort to recruit and maintain these qualified deputies. He will continue to work closely with the deputies to make sure they are supported and have the resources they need to be effective. He strives to give Douglas County residents confidence that the sheriff’s office will do what’s right at all times and keep Douglas County safe and great place to live and raise a family.
